Japan, which is known as a closed country with a strong inclination toward nationalism, is now trying to abandon the closed attitude toward foreigners, changing its policy direction to embrace and support non-natives, which has proven to be successful. This paper focuses on the Itami Madang festival in Japan as an example.
The results have shown that Itami Madang can help local communities increase their understanding of different cultures and have the potential to achieve coexistence across a wide variety of cultures. In particular, it has made sure that different community activities, which had begun as casual gatherings, would be developed into a strong community spirit and that they could help to realize true value of coexistence.
Recently, different multicultural festivals have been held around Korea. However, the majority of them ended up being a one-time event because they concentrated only on more strategic aspects to boost the economy. These festivals should be required to focus more on elements like gaining insight into the underlying aspects of multicultural society.
