In this article, constructional and structural characteristics of metal building systems (or so called PEB systems) nowadays widely used for low-rise nonresidential building construction is first presented. Next, the causes of recent roof collapse tragedy that occurred in a Gyeongju resort place Feb. this year are briefly discussed based on the forensic investigation conducted by the joint team of KSSC, AIK and KSEA.
It is shown through advanced nonlinear numerical analysis that the optimized PEB systems, composed of web tapered members with slender sections, are inherently “non-redundant and brittle” because the system strength rapidly degrades upon local buckling at the critical locations such as the beam end and the panel zone, thus demanding very careful consideration in assuring structural stability and safety. The importance of overall and local stability design is emphasized. For example, roof systems composed of sandwich panel, self-drilling screw and cold formed Z or C sections should be designed as a truly structural system. Design standards and guides that should be used for designing PEB systems are briefly reviewed.
The key causes of the roof collapse tragedy at Gyeongju, identified by the joint team of KSSC-AIK-KSEA, included the missing of self-drilling screws in stitching the roof panel to the purlin and the under-strength steel material used for the main rafter. Advanced nonlinear numerical analyses under various scenarios were extensively used in the forensic investigation and was very instrumental in identifying the causes. Premature failure of the purlins caused by the missing of self-drilling screws made the purlins lose their stability bracing role to the main rafter, and triggered the horizontal progressive collapse (or total roof collapse). The under-strength steel material used for the main rafter was also identified as an equally important cause for the roof collapse.
