The subjects of this study were 20 women of 55 to 65 years old who were healthy without special diseases and had not participated in professional exercise programs. They were sampled in cooperation with B-dong Community Center and J-dong Community Center in N-gu, D Metropolitan City. They were divided into the Pilates exercise group(n=10) and the control group(n=lO) to analyze the effects of Pilates on bone mineral density(BMD), abdominal fat, and depression that is considered as the most important reason in postmenopausal women. The results were as follows.
Bone mineral density was statistically significantly increased in spinal BMD and femoral neck BMD after Pilates exercise and depression was significantly decreased after Pilates exercise. Abdominal fat was statistically significantly decreased in SFA and VFA after Pilates exercise. VSR of abdominal fat was also decreased after Pilates exercise but did not show a statistically significant difference.
Based on the results, although Pilates exercise may have a positive effect on bone mineral density(BMD), abdominal fat, and depression in postmenopausal women, further research should be conducted to examine other influencing factors.
