This thesis is a study on a method of meeting between cinema and literature through considering 〈The Russian Novel〉 directed and written by Shin Youn?sik. The ultimate purpose of this study is to look at the relationship between novel and cinema. One of the distinguishing aspects of recent novels is that cinema frequently appears as a motif or an essential material for a novel. This feature proves that novel and cinema have overturned their roles so that they provide essential motifs to each other or share equal positions. Now cinema is a new stimulus and an essential nutriment for novel. Similarly, one of the distinctive features of contemporary cinemas is that letter media like novels and poems frequently appear as a motif or an essential material for the genre. As in 〈The Russian Novel〉, it is an interesting feature that most of contemporary cinemas frequently create a significant number of characters who like a literature genre, who are related to the literature industry, or who are interested in novel writing. The selection and choice of a subject matter is the result of the director’s(or the writer’s) careful attention and cognition. Therefore, the multiple uses of literature or novel in a cinema indicate that directors are interested in literature and they are aware of its new significance. The usage of literature as a subject matter or motif in a cinema presents that a motion picture(cinema) and literature are forming a close relationship to each other. Accordingly, the relationship between literature and motion pictures legitimately has effects on each other’s story telling.
