The purpose of this study was to organize the concept of line of development. Line of development is learning certain historical topics based on their chronological transition and development in comparison to preceded and followed periods, and often confused with topical learning or chronological learning. However, it is differentiated from topical learning as it separates one topic to discuss it over a long period of time and from chronological learning as it does not discuss all events in the flow of history. Line of development can lessen the burden of learners as it does not discuss all events in history. Also, line of development can be used to motivate students as it is closely related to students’ experiences and knowledge and may contribute to developing insights to approach issues from different perspectives and awareness of causality.
Therefore, creating a History textbook based on line of development could evade the criticism that History textbooks are simply attempting superficial Sequence. Also, it could make History a more interesting and functional subject that reflects the needs of schools and regions.
