Could doctors be happy in the colonial modern situation? This paper aims to analyse contradictory social identities of the medical doctors through the investigation on the lives of several Korean doctors in colonial Korea. In 1910s, Korean young medicos and doctors were very active in independence movements. However, the absolute majority of them chose to be a doctor as a medical profession in Korea except some who participated in overseas independence movements. They sought happiness in harmonious coexistence of professional calling, social honor, and economic success.
Organizing themselves, they established their own medical associations against Japanese doctors, and maintained those organizations against colonial power for a long time. Based on those organizations, they could pursue economic interests, protests against ethnic discrimination, and medical aid and enlightenment for Korean. They enjoyed quite a reputation as intellectuals and influential men in the local society.
At the same time, some of them were criticized for their greedy economic desire, for they often denied to cure poor patients and asked high medical fee. Defying this kind of criticism as mediamorphosis, doctors came up against newspapers and people. Korean doctors and peole were often in trouble each other.
In the colonial modern situation, Korean doctors’ seeking medical progress and responsing professional calling were essentially in discord with improvement of general health situation. Doctors who resided in the colonial modern situation were frontiers of modern civilization and national elites as well as members of the oppressive colonial regime and rising modern bourgeoisie. Their pride and economic desire continuously contradicted their sympathy and distrust for people. Without a connection to the radical political prospect, the road to vocational happiness of medical doctors was destined to be narrow, dangerous, and eventually impossible.
