The crucial characteristic of torture is absolute imbalance of power between torturer and victim of torture. The victim of torture is faced with forced choice, ‘torture or confession?’ j ust a s t he subject’s choice forced by the Other, ‘money or life?’ Metaphorical substitution of the Other, change of the symbolic order, and rectification of the subject are being made in the process of torture. The principal discourse of torturer is ‘discourse of the master’, for example “you are a spy because I say so.” And then, ‘discourse of the university’ is the next to come. The victim of torture must undertake responsibility of presenting rational evidences which bear the witness to fabricated crime of espionage. The story fabricated by torturer always have some holes, so torturer need to have voluntary cooperation of the victim of torture. In other words, the symbolic transference, the supposition that the torturer is ‘a subject who knows,’ is a necessary condition of torture process. While torturer fabricates the scenario of crime, he himself comes to believe in that scenario truly as torture proceeds. But, like the Pascal’s statement, ‘pray, and belief will come by itself,’ the belief is forged only retrospectively. In ‘torture machine,’ torturer practices, naturally, without reluctance the torture and fabrication regardless of his inner belief. The fabrication of espionage has been a last resort when the investigation of crime encounters the difficulties. The spy functions as a fetish that not only affirms but also denies the contradictions of a given society, just like the Jews did in Nazi society. Kafkaesque obscenity that is represented by the judges in the Kafka’s work, The Trial, plays an important role in the final verdict of these cases. We can find extreme arbitrariness with regard to determining the truth depending on changes of political power in the tragic history of ideological confrontation between the left and the right in contemporary Korea. In order that the victim of torture recovers his destroyed identity, he firstly needs a mirror image similar to him, and then symbolic recognition of society. That is the reason why Geun-tae Kim, Byung-jin Kim, and Seung Suh has recorded painfully their experiences of torture.
