At this moment of July 2014, 48 colleges, which are over half of the 5-year architectural degree programs in Korea, are going through all the vicissitudes for the accreditation system of professional architectural degree programs. They have passed either the first or the second step of the accreditation process and are preparing for the next level. The introduction process of this 5-year architectural degree program and the accreditation system was carried out quite quickly due to the anxiety for rapidly changing surroundings and competitive atmosphere among colleges, thus bearing possibilities of side effects.
Therefore, this article aims for going through the last decade’ s current, mainly with the related professionals’ writings and publications about the problems and issues during the implementation process. Moreover, another purpose is to point out the issues of further discussion, including the identity, autonomy, professionality, rationality, continuity, and consistency of the architectural education programs.
As the 2014 building code is enacted and the substantial system of 5-year educational program is established now, it is time for a careful verification on educational, practical, and legal aspects of professional architectural degree programs as well as on the side effects revealed throughout the implementation process. Also, the related professionals should actively participate in the in-depth discussions on those issues.
