This research examines the craft section of the Joseon Fine Arts Exhibition (1922~1940).
To date, the arguments on Joseon Fine Arts Exhibition have been analyzed focusing on only paintings. However, the craft section is an important key to understand the acceptance of craft and design notions that had not existed in Korea up to that time. I aimed to analyze cause and effect in the establishment of the craft section in relation to two themes; One, the controversy among painters about whether calligraphy could be included in the field of art or not. Second, Japanese enthusiasm about Korean crafts in the 1920s such as the Mingei movement of Yanagi Muneyoshi and the investigations of historical sites at Nakrangduring the Japanese Colonial Period. By using catalogues, newspapers, magazines, and records of the Japanese Government-General of Korea at that time, it was discovered that the concepts of craft not only as fine arts but also as industry were introduced to Korea through the exhibition.
