The vicissitudes of characters in “A Painful Case” allude that love is a major cause of human agony. Although the inner voice of Emily Sinico cries out her loneliness constantly, no one hears it but her. This shows her lack of mutual interaction with others. Finally even when she expresses her unyielding love, her love is misunderstood as depravity. James Duffy as a self-absorbed man tries to recuperate the image of Superman, through a relationship with Emily, but ironically it turns into what he has never had. These contorted images of love only lead to usurping human dignity and existence. From this viewpoint, the focal point of this paper centers on explaining love as a main cause of alienation and self-injury among people. Lacan expounds his views on love and sex from a psychoanalytic perspective. He argues that love is the desire to be one and that is why love can never be realized fully because desire is sustained on the basis that the desire is insatiable.
