DAZAI Osamu"s "Kamome[Sea gull]" which it finished writing in November, 1939 has been expressing well about the time situation under Second Sino-Japanese War started in 1937. The government mobilized all to war, forced the life which wanted and added the restriction in many of everyday life to people. ‘I’ which can not be a military man sends Comfort Bag that a woman behind the lines sends, it feels a strong inferiority complex and shame. And, ‘I’ has the sadness and loneliness which are commented to be a ‘lunatic’ in the world by the thing of five years ago. On the other hand, to ‘I’ which worries about the shortage of goods, when it was only making a great uproar in the newspaper, it was rejected, and the section of people who lead the life which became abundant by prosperity by Second Sino-Japanese War was reflected through the figure of the ‘wife’ ‘I’ has the strong will which pursues true art.
And he is conscious of the existence which employs efficiently a lunatic, i.e., ‘the self which is not persons’, being ‘art’ insertion of Biblical language "Kamome" It is a work which tried to express the power of drawing not the work in which the pressure from the time of war and conflict as DAZAI"s writer were drawn but the figure of people who do somehow or other and try to make a living though it wanders about, and ‘me’ who sympathize with it and try to go toward raw both, and making a living the painful time bravely. The figure which does not yield during a steep Second Sino-Japanese War, but tries to make a living, and the figure of the quiet resistance to a time appear in the figure of DAZAI describing "I" which makes a living bravely as a writer.
