This study describes the history of the translation of wakas from Japanese into Korean during the colonial period, focusing on four texts in particular. First, I discuss The Poetical Works of Majesty Meiji Tenno, which was translated into Korean by Lee Gwang-su. This collection of translated texts was released right before the start of the Pacific War, and they were written under the theme of the Russo-Japanese War. Second, I focus on Sakimorinouta, which was translated by Seo Doo-soo. It was released when the Pacific War was in full swing. This text was translated into Korean after selecting Sakimorinouta only, which described loyalty and patriotism in Mannyousyu. Finally, I discuss Kim Eok’s Korean abridged translations of Mannyousyu and One Hundred Patriotic Poems in Korean Translation, which were released during the Pacific War. This version of Mannyousyu was translated with the goal of transferring Japanese people’s elegant culture, love of family, and respect for the Japanese Imperial Family to the Korean people. With One Hundred Patriotic Poems in Korean Translation, he also attempted to introduce wakas, which described the loyalty and patriotism of the Korean people.
