This study focuses on the use of cogeneration systems for complex commercial buildings (CCB). Cogeneration may become more attractive if functions that have different heat-to-power ratios are combined within a single building, in order to match the heat-to-power ratio of the cogeneration system. The operational performance of cogeneration systems is simulated to identify optimum design parameters for a complex, mixed-use development comprising stores and residential areas. The results show that the use of cogeneration within a CCB can achieve greater reductions in primary energy consumption than a system that considers commercial and residential areas individually. The results also suggest that the optimum design involves operating the cogeneration system in electricity tracking mode, with the lowest possible heat-to-power ratio, and matching the system’s heat-to-power ratio to that of the building. In addition, the relationship between energy saving ratio and ratio of commercial to residential areas displays similar trends even when part-load efficiency is considered.
