This paper examines Prov 30:1-9 in its own literary context and further considers its theological implications. This writer argues that it is a text of Agur"s instruction which includes a divine oracle and delivers pious teachings in toto. In Prov 30:2-3, Agur understands himself as a beast without wisdom, which functions to alarm and lead the readers to the next verses. Prov 30:4 asks a series of questions in order to raise an issue regarding what a life of a believer should be like. Then, Prov 30:5-6, by connecting with other parts of the Old Testament, places an emphasis upon the word of God. Finally, Prov 30:7-9 provides an exemplary life-style of a believer and warns against temptations that would deviate the believer from the right way. Therefore, it seems warranted to state that Prov 30:1-9 presents a literary and theological unity construed by all its thematic connections and intentional ambiguities residing in its texts. Verses 2-4 functions to raise various questions and thereby verses 5-9 serves to answer the questions. The theological implications of this passage lie in the importance of the epistemological discernment on the basis of the word of God. A believer"s life is defined as a way of pondering upon who God is and who oneself is, paying attention to what could deviate oneself from it. In conclusion, Prov 30:1-9 functions to provide a principle of a believer"s life. The next passage, Prov 30:10-33, comes with a variety of applications of this principle, which will be a topic of the next study of this writer.
