Dmitrij Pisarev succinctly summarized the content of L.N. Tolstoj's Three Deaths in the same year of its publication in 1859, claiming that this work lacks in its organic unity: "Рассказ Толстого состоит из трех отдельных эскизов, связанных между собою только характером содержания; общей нити рассказа нет. Автор изобразил только три момента, три смерти, происшедшие при различных условиях, при различной обстановке, и, обрисовав самыми яркими красками это различие, выставил во свех трех те общие явления, которые сопровождают собою разрушение всякого организама." Pisarev's assertion on the absence of the organic poetic unity in Tolstoy's Three Deaths is well known fact and widely accepted by many scholars. Konkina also shares this point of view: "Три плана повествования, связанные между собой только внешним композиционным единством, не имеют внутренней связи, отражения одной сюжетной линии в другой." However, the organic poetic unity plays significant role in this short story. Finding out and analyzing the poetic unity in this literary work are the main thesis of this paper.
Despite Pisarev's and Konkina's assertions, there is an organic poetic unity in this story. I contend that this unity is a combination of two opposite poetic techniques; the law of diminishing poetics dominates on the level of description of the tree deaths. The noble woman's death is the largest part of this work, whereas the death of a tree is such simple and sublime as a poem. The cab driver Fedor's death is located in the middle of these two deaths. Thus it functions as a pivotal linkage that connects the two basically different types of deaths.
The law of diminishing poetics is applied to the level of thanatology. The noble woman's death shows the most various aspects of thanatology; especially the second stage of fatally ill patient's reactions; anger, zealous. The noble woman does not conceal her own discomfort and discontentment. She also shows zealousness toward her maid's health, her husband ordinary way of life and her children's health. To describe this type of negative death, the law of diminishing poetics is utilized. The death of a tree does not contain any kind of thanatological negative aspects at all. This death is nothing but positive example of desired death by all human beings.
The law of diminishing describing poetics does not fortify the organic unity in this work. There is an opposite poetics that makes this apparently unbalanced work perfectly balanced; the law of increasing poetics. The noble woman's death completely lacks in positive aspects in terms of "Tolstoyism." There is no altruism in her death. But the altruism is increased in the death of driver Fedor. Fedor gives his boots to Serega. Thus the boots, fit perfectly to Serega's feet, live a new life. This death, however, stays in the middle of the two different deaths. Fedor gives his boots to Serega with one condition; to buy a stone for his tomb. The culmination of altruism is in the death of a tree: there is nothing negative. There, thus, no reason to describe as long as the noble woman's death. The death of a tree is simply altruism itself.
So, the two opposite poetics consist of this short text being based on the well balanced organic unity.
