Abstract· Keywords
Chuang Tzu is a philosopher with strong criticism. He does not talk about human life or philosophy without commenting society or politics though he is reluctant to be involved in political activities. It is because he has his own political opinions and ideals. His ideal society is the utopia with highest morality and his preferred politics is ruling through activity by means of non-activity. He wants his utopia to be realized in human society and to be accepted by people.
Chuang Tzu does not oppose to society itself. He only opposes to the societies in Warring States Period. His utopia is a society in which all things as well as all men are equal. All things are equal insofar as they have basic rights rooted in their own nature though their appearance are different from one another. That is why all things have the right to enjoy their own freedom and why all things are equal.
There are hierarchies in human society though Nature (Tien) created all things equally. In Warring States Period, all the societies had hierarchies divided from emperor to slaves and distributed rights according to their classes.
So Chuang Tzu holds that emperor and I cannot be discriminated because both are all sons of Nature. Here, Ideal society suggested by him is the utopia. It may prima facie seem to be anarchy or laissez-faire. In fact, his utopia is not noninterference but that of activity by means of non-activity and of highest morality. What he suggests is the way to freedom and equality though it was hard to be achieved.
