In modern Korea, the crane has come to symbolize a wide range of meanings. Even the broad concept of “tradition” itself is represented through the crane as it has carried over the various tales that have been ascribed to it since the old ages. This bird was said to have the ability to cross over to the Taoist paradise, to represent the life of a virtuous man, and to be a sign of luck and a good omen. But during the 20th century the object of good fortune changed first with the transition from Kingdom to nation state and then with the dilution of the state to smaller communities of regions down to the marital relationship of man and woman. Although no class of Confucian literary existed anymore, the attitude of the virtuous man still remained a point of orientation for intellectuals during that time which led them to include this image of the crane in their self-portraits as well.
The various connotations expressed in pictures of the crane were like other symbols during the 20th century subject to continuous experiments and change. Despite being a traditional symbol, therefore changes in its depiction can be analyzed through the influence of this force of change that was set in motion with modernity.
