This paper aims to examine the role of blind man in terms of improving human relationship in Lawrence’s “The Blind Man” and Caver’s “Cathedral”. Since communication technology plays very important role in human relationship in 21<SUP>st</SUP> century, the result of this study will contribute greatly to improving mutual communication. According to this study, emotional communication based on physical contact can be vital in achieving good relationships with other people.
In “the Blind Man” Lawrence is concerned with the blind man. Maurice is successful in search of intimacy based on physical contact with emotional communication. Lawrence contrasts Maurice’s relationship with his wife Isabel with Bertie’s relationship with Isabel. Maurice can develop human intimacy thanks to emotional communication based on physical contact. While Bertie stands for social success based on reason and self-centered egotism, he fails to develop his relationship with Isabel. On the other hand, In “Cathedral” this paper analyses the blind man’s relationship with his wife and narrator. The blind man succeeds in developing good relationships with narrator and his wife through emotional communication based on physical contact. As a result, this study shows that both writers put emphasis on developing human intimacy through sheer immediacy of sensuous feeling, something invisible that is beyond language.
