This paper presents a comparative study of conceptual metaphors of anger in Korean and Japanese idioms. The results of the study show that both the Korean and Japanese idioms relating to anger are conceptualized metaphorically as hot water, action, animal, weather and color. But the results also show that Korean idioms are conceptualized metaphorically as heat, fire, organ and flavor, while Japanese idioms are conceptualized metaphorically as object or plant. Thus, Korean idioms have been shown to express intense feelings of anger more than those of Japanese idioms. This study provides support for the claim by cognitive linguistic theories that the conceptualization of anger has universality across cultures and languages. At the same time, the conceptualization of anger can also have variation across cultures and languages since metaphorical concepts of all types arise from physical and cultural experiences.
