초록· 키워드

The purpose of this study is to investigate the life and activities of Heo Im, who lived a life as an acupuncturist with an outstanding personal competence overcoming Imjin War(Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592) and King Injo Restoration
He was born to parents who were salves in government employ and servants. His father, Heo Eokbong, was an extraordinary musician who was good at playing the flute and the geomungo. He also excelled in the dance of a crane. Heo Im was inherited not only the humble social status but also the artistic gift from his parents. During Imjin War, he displayed his great talent as an acupuncturist and furthermore overcame the limitation from his low social status. He served for the crown prince, Gwanghaegun with acupuncture and surgical treatment during Imjin era. He was promoted to a Dangsangkwan(a state councilor) and entitled to the third rank of Wiseonggongshin after Gwanghaegun took the throne. He gained a favor from King Gwanghaegun and served for his king as a governor in Gyeongggi area near the capital city.
However, he had to go through an adversity because of King Injo Restoration. His official title was eliminated after 10-year of service and was expelled. But his great reputation as an acupuncturist made King Injo government record him as the second official rank Jungsawonjonggongshin. King Injo also got acupunctural treatment from him and gave him a prize. He disregarded likes and dislikes without any discrimination of social rank and offered a great acupunctural treatment for anyone. He settled down in Gongju and spent his latter years there. He fostered numerous students and medicated his past life there.
Heo Im had a life based on Gongju during Imjin War. It is assumed that he was given a land from the king when he was promoted to the third rank of Wiseonggongshin. This became an opportunity for him to settle down in Gongju with this financial background. It is assumed that he would have spent his latter life for fostering students and for writing books on acupuncture techniques. His descendents and his student, Choi Wooryang lived in Bujeongdong Gongju. It is the place where Heo Im wrote Chimgukyeongheombang(a document on the needle and moxa treatment techniques) and fostered his students.
