The purpose of this paper is to review the assessment method of change to sports science research and to introduce heirarchical linear model(HLM) as change growth model. HLM is a statistical model to analyze behavioral and social data that commonly have nested structure. The repeated observations within persons are properly conceived as nested within persons. Also longitudinal data such as physique, physical fitness, and motor skill development data are nested within persons. Therefore, HLM can be used to assess the change, such as studying the structure of individual growth and estimating important statistical and psychometric properties of collections of growth trajectories, discovering correlates of initial states and change rates, and testing hypotheses about the effects of one or more experimental treatments on growth curves. The most notable merit of HLM as change growth model is that it take into account the individual change and group change in a model. This can eliminate the problems of the classical statistical model like repeated ANOVA. The major advantages of this change growth model in analyzing multilevel data include improving the estimation of individual performance, modeling cross-level effects, and partitioning variance-covariance components. In conclusion, HLM as change growth model should be considered to assess the change of human performance in physical education and sports science.
