A moonwalker is an outdoor exercise machine designed to simulat e walking and running along with dynamic stretching. This machine is widespread in local parks in Korea and thus a popular exercise machine for the elderly. For better exercise effect and safe use of this ma chine, this study investigated muscle recruitment strategies and speed-dependent muscle activations. In this study, we monitored activations of muscles in the thigh and lower back regions (left/right erector spinae, gluteus maximus, biceps femoris, semitendinosus, rectus femoris, vastus medialis) using surface electromyography (sEMG) while subjects (n = 12 female; mean age 72 ± 3.6 years; height 151.8 ± 5.2 cm; mass 58.3 ± 7.0 kg) were exercising on a moonwalker at systematically varying speeds (105, 115 and 125 beat/min). During exercise on a moonwalker, it was observed that faster exercise speed brought in higher activation of the lower back and thigh muscle increased. Activation of the lower back muscles were maximum when the hip joint was h yper-extension. Activation of lower back muscle was maximum when the contralateral leg went through hip extension phase. For the hip extensors, pre-activation of the muscles was observed prior to the actual hip extension and activation of those muscles reached the maximum during the early hip extension phase. For the quadriceps muscles, the maximum activation reached during the late hip extension phase and the early hip flexion phase for the vastus medialis and the rectus femoris, respectively. In conclusion, when exercising using a moonwalker, the speed of exercise should be faster than the normal walking speed of the elderly because of inducing antagonist pre-activation and enhancing muscle activation.
