This study is to investigate whether regular morning walks can be helpful to relieve mental stress and to improve cognitive ability, by the measurement of the alpha brain waves of rest condition. The experiment was conducted on 22 male students at a high school located in a city, South Korea. They expressed their intention to participate in the experiment after receiving a full ex planation about the experiment and procedure and understood them, and they and their parents signed the consent form. The 22 subjects were divided into 2 groups in 11s by lots, i.e., an experimental group and a control group. All of them had no case history and were found not to have difficulty participating in the experiment and had not taken regular exercise in the past 6 months. They participated in the experiment 5 times a week for 8 weeks, from March 7 to May 1, 2011. Prior to the experiment, each student`s height was measured by the use of the height measuring instrument ‘N20 (aiia, Korea).’ The brain wave was measured from the terminals putted on frontal lobes and prefrontal lobes for 3 minutes, by the use of ‘ployG-I (LAXTHA, Korea).’ After the experiment, the alpha brain wave was measured under the same conditions. All the variables were analyzed by the use of the statistical program ‘Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS; version 18.0). the results were expressed in mean plus/minus standard deviation (M±SD). The pairedsample t-test was applied to the analysis of intergroup differences, and the independent-sample t-test was used to compare the mean value of intergroup variables. The significance level was defined as where the alpha-value equaled 0.05. The results showed that the significant amplification of alpha waves were observed from the left prefrontal lobe (Fp1) and the right one (Fp2) in subjects who took a walk every morning. The left frontal lobe (F3) and the right one (F4) did not show significant differences, but the experimental group showed a more significant amplification in comparison with the control group. In conclusion, regular morning walks were found to amplify alpha waves from the prefrontal lobe. Teenagers` regular morning walks are expected to be helpful for the structural development of the brain, the improvement of cognitive ability and the boost of self-confidence, and moreover, for the release of anxiety and stress.
