This study analyzes the types of mistranslation and arbitrary translation of the translator when translating Chinese literature. The result shows that the types of mistranslation can be classified into three categories. One, mistranslation occurs in the understanding of the sentence component such as subject, object or predicate. Compared to Korean, Chinese language is distinctive in its formation of sentences with more variety and freedom. Therefore, many fallacies occur in translation. Second is the mistranslation caused by direct translation. It often occurs when translating idiomatic or metaphorical expressions. Translators focus mainly on the dictionary meanings of the words, which leads to misunderstanding of figurative meanings in sentences and eventually does not deliver the actual meanings of the original sentences. Third is caused by the mistranslation of the exact meaning of the words. This mistranslation occurs when the cultural or social meanings of the words are not fully identified when translating. The social background of words affects the emotional coloring of lexical meanings. If the positive or negative nuances the words carry are not precisely recognized, it leads to mistranslation. The mistranslation in word translation frequently occurs in translation of predicate and adverb in a sentence. Predicate describes the main actions in a sentence, and the adverb emphasizes certain tone and contains implicative meaning. But in translation, this is often overlooked and eventually simplifies the original meaning or delivers false translation. Translators, on the other hand, adds supplementary information to the original meaning of the literary work being translated into. Because translated works bear readers from various culture with different languages, the supplementation of the translators helps readers’ understanding and enhances their access to literary works. Therefore, the types of arbitrary translation were analyzed and the result is that contents rooted in heavy cultural background resulted in arbitrary translation.
