This paper provides a critical review of Leonardo Boff`s model of perichoresis-communion, with which he seeks a transformation in social relations amist economic inequality and political oppression. Placing his model in the context of contemporary renaissance of the doctrine of the Trinity, this paper analyses and reappraises his dealings with the relation between the Trinity and society. In so doing, this paper argues that Boff`s own theological limitations lurking in his discussion on the relation between the Trinity and society finally betray his "social project" or "liberation program." Boff`s understanding of the Trinity is remarkably characterized by his emphasis on perichoresis, which means complete communion among the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. According to Boff, such perichoresis could imply not only Filioque (and from the Son), but also Patreque (and from the Father) and Spirituque (and from the Spirit). This complete communion of perichoresis becomes "the basic thesis" or "the structuring principle" for his discussion. With these Boff has a theological prospect that faith in the Holy Trinity would be able to unleash its liberating potential in society. However, a meticulous review of Boff`s discussion on the relation between the economic Trinity and the immanent Trinity shows that, despite his original intension to accept Rahner`s rule of identity, he unavoidably leads to introducing a gap between them, which, in turn, comes to loosen a close link, correlation, or correspondence between them. Thus, for him, the immanent Trinity is much more than the economic Trinity. And Boff states that the mystery of the Trinity is partially, not fully, manifested to us, and that the economic Trinity provides merely glimpses of the immanent Trinity. Another careful reading of Boff`s discussion on the economic-immanent Trinity relation reveals that his prominent concentration on the unfathomable mystery lurks in his discussion on the Trinity and thus betrays his own theological prospect. In brief, Boff`s strong focus on the mystery of the Trinity makes an impact on his position which opens a wide gap between the immanent and the economic Trinity. And this gap, in turn, finally betrays his "social project" or "liberation program."
