In his life time, particularly during his office as the bishop of Carthage, Cyprian encountered three difficult but very crucial theological issues: (1) the issue of the identity of the Church and its relation to the role of the bishop; (2) the issue of the unity and the purity of the Church after a persecution; and (3) the issue of rebaptism or reconciliation of sinners. Moreover, he had to explain his own situation. The issues which Cyprian encountered, however, clearly contain the interaction between theological issues, on the one hand, and practical, ministrial situations, on the other hand. Cyprian`s role was to maintain the authority of the bishop over a Christian community and at the same time, he had to encourage Christians in the community to live the gospel of life. While Tertullian understood the Holy Spirit as a charismatic gift for individual Christians with the result that a spiritual ascetic would have more spiritual authority than a person in church office, Cyprian attempted to place the Holy Spirit as the foundation of making a true Church. In other words, the Spirit was considered as the source whereby the Church could maintain its individual and communal dimensions. Therefore, Cyprian`s major contribution was twofold: (1) to accept an individual`s spiritual experience through the works of the Holy Spirit in the process of the forgiveness of sins; (2) to theologize on the relationship between the Holy Spirit and baptism as well as on the Holy Spirit and church office in and through the Church.
