The opening ceremony of the Jjajangmeon (black bean noodles) museum where Gonghwachun (共和春) was built in the Incheon Chinatown was held in April 2012. Gonghwachun, a Chinese restaurant, was built by overseas Chinese who emigrated from China in the late 19th century, but went out of business in the early 1980s. Interestingly, a discourse that Gonghwachun is the birthplace of the Jjajangmeon, in other words, the original dining room where Jjajangmeon was served first began circulating without any archaeological evidence after the normalization between South Korea and China in 1992. At the same time the Chinatown in Incheon emerged as a center of the tourism industry. Despite opposition from overseas Chinese in the region, local and national governments constructed the Jjajangmeon museum after designating Gonghwachun as a registered cultural asset and purchasing the land. In this way, the Jjajangmeon museum became the subject of debates in the interpretation and construction of it among a variety of agents such as national and local government, archaeologists, and overseas Chinese. In this paper, I describe not only a variety of environments but also contexts of inter-group tensions and contestations and how the needs of the tourists as the actual consumer play out in detail through ethnography. In conclusion, I suggest that the participation and cooperation of migrant communities should be emphasized rather than nationalism in promoting tourism and educational resources such as ethnic food culture and museum more effectively.
