A tug of war is distributed worldwide, but which is concentrated on Southeast and Northeast Asia. This study aims to the commonality and diversity of tug-of-war through analysis on contents such as history, areas of distribution, time and purpose of the play and characteristics of tug-of-war of Southeast and Northeast Asian countries.
The main body of this paper selected six key words related to tug-of-war and looked into the commonality and diversity of tug-of-war of Southeast and Northeast Asia. The items include ① origin; ② distribution; ③ shape of rope; ④ symbol and sexual combination of rope; ⑤ time of transmission; and ⑥ community. Also, the conclusion summarizes the details of theory on the origin of tug-of-war.
The author considered in this paper that it started as a kind of military training for a sea battle, but as it was passed on among the people, it developed as a play of a wish of peace of the village, and then as it was integrated to agriculture, shamanistic and religious characteristics were formed. The theory of the origin of tug-of-war from a sea battle developed logic through Chinese and Vietnamese materials, English name (a tug of war) and Chinese names (葛戰·索戰·鄕戰).
The rope that first appeared in Southeast and Northeast Asian literature was not ‘rice straw’ but ‘bamboo bark’, ‘yam’, ‘arrow root’ or ‘silver grass’. Thus, it seems somewhat too much to relate tug-of-war directly to rice farming regions only with the fact that the recent material of tug-of-war is ‘rice straw.’ This paper judged that tug-of-war could developed by the interaction between tug-of-war in coast areas and fishermen, that is, by the interaction between the naval forces (fishermen) that knew how to make a boat rope like an anchor cable and farmers who could easily get materials such as arrow root, yam and rice straw.
Ropes in Southeast and Northeast Asian countries are divided into single, double and side ropes, and single rope is the majority in Southeast Asia; double rope and side rope tug-of-war in Northeast Asia and China (in old literature); and single and side ropes in Japan. In contrast, since there are all types of rope, such as single rope, double rope, and side rope in Korea, it is seen as the destination of the tug-of-war silk road.
In addition, regarding the common characteristics of Southeast and Northeast Asian tug-of-war, sea god (dragon and snake), simulation of genital organ and sexual intercourse, seasonal play and wish for abundance, peace and unity of the village, the commonality and diversity of the tug-of-war were examined through cases of each country.
Lastly, the origin of tug-of-war is divided into Chinese, Southeast Asian, Indian and native origin. The author put weight on the theory of a Chinese origin since its record related to tug-of-war is the earliest, shape of rope and method of play, time and purpose of play are the same as those of Korea and Japan.
