This is the study on image folkloristic significance Kim-sunam photos.
The reason why we pay attention to him is the image folkloristic possibility that his series of ‘Korean Gut’ shows us.
Study of image folklorism can be divided into two directions ; image production and contents analysis.
He bore fruit with high completion in the fields of image production, especially photography.
Kim-sunam’s series of ‘Korean Gut’ including ‘Gangneung Dano Gut’ contains a criteria measuring image folkloristic usefulness.
The first one is suitable application of technique for image production.
Photography is made through mechanism of camera. From this reason, good handling of mechanism ensures dramatic effect as well as good shooting of the images.
Kim-sunam’s photos shows appropriate techniques in various fields such as exposure, focus, angle, and frame.
He demonstrates image folkloristic documentation by puting the right folkloristic contents and symbols in the right places as well as photos’ external degree of completion.
The second one is images’ own artistic value.
In his photos, each small mark can mean the whole. Even though it accounts for small part of the photo, it exposes Gut on the whole.
‘Korean Gut’, filled with Kim-sunam’s metonymic techniques, not only has the value as materials but also develops into photo arts.
The third one is that his work acted as stepping stone for development of local folklore culture, and made folklore into cultural contents.
‘Korean Gut’ is a series publication with 20 volumes.
Kim-sunma’s photos was exhibited in Japan and European countries as well as Korea.
His photos equal cultural contents. He work shows us that folklore is a good theme of taking photos and developed folklore into cultural contents.
