In Korea society, the memories of liberation and Korean-war, which were often composed as national suffering, play an important role that organizes national identity. Emphasizing the past as pain and ordeal, Narration of suffering makes us to imagine specific national identity. At the same time, it also makes us distinguish ‘us’ and ‘them’ and courage "us" to unity as nation. The liberation period was the time that this narration appeared in specific form. Through standardizing the memories of colonial period as suffering of nation, novels in liberation period emphasized the goal of nation-building and got over the past. Painful memories converged in nation-state discourse with narration of suffering. This article tries to discover the meaning of nation narration understanding the peculiarity of narration of suffering that easily transfers to narration of nation. Nation narration based the two aspects which are educational and perfomative.
An hoe-nam’s 불 and Choi Jeong-hee’s 풍류 잽히는 마을 focused on the suffering of a peasant, and have a common way to describe that recorded their lives as others" by narrators who are similar to writers. The way to describe painful lives of peasant has ambivalent aspects. Firstly, it shows the process to being a member of nation-state and secondly, it comes up with the other’s pain that cannot be articulated and converged in nation narration. The narrators of these novels describe the peasants’ painful lives as a result of Japanese colonial and feudalism system and make the object nation. However, at the same time, the narration reveals the pain that cannot be articulated by narrators who are intellectuals. These omitted pains break the stable narration of nation by narrator. As the result these novels expose the Narrators’ nervous anxiety when they discovered the others’ pain that could not be converged in their narration. These kinds of narration of suffering function as the performative aspect and reveal the nation who is excluded the nation-state.
