This paper seeks to gain a concrete understanding of the process of the founding of the Joseon Dynasty that commenced at the end of the Goryeo Kingdom. Joseon was established by neo-Confucian scholars with the theory of the Mandate of Heaven (天命論) as its underlying principle. The reason they could embrace the idea of transforming society through dynastic change (易姓) is that they viewed Goryeo as a society bereft of the Mandate of the Heaven. In understanding the Joseon Dynasty’s founding process, therefore, the focus should be on how Goryeo’s reform-minded scholar officials perceived their kingdom, rather than the way struggles amongst the competing political forces unfolded in the late Goryeo period. To this end, this paper sheds light on the context in which Jeong Do-jeon, who actively took the lead in the establishment of the new dynasty, adopted this means of dynastic change by investigating his perception of Goryeo.
First, Jeong Do-jeon’s thought is reexamined from a few different perspectives. The historical background for assessing his thought as being anchored in an anti-Buddhist doctrine and the validity of such judgment are examined. From this examination, it appears that such a view on Jeong’s stance on Buddhism was formed as a result of accentuating the historical significance and symbolism of Bulssi Japbyeon (Buddha’s Nonsense)and it is more appropriate to consider the rejection of heterodoxy as central to his thought.
Second, the basis for Jeong’s adoption of dynastic change is examined in connection with his thought. Jeong’s quest for the right way (正道) through the rejection of heterodoxy caused him to view with a critical eye both the perspective of Confucian scholars who advocated the Theory of Unity among Three Teachings (三敎一致論Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism) and the kings’ worship of Buddha (崇佛). He thought that his society, which failed to distinguish neo-Confucianism from unjust and unvirtuous Taoist and Buddhist thoughts, was in a state devoid of the Mandate of the Heaven, and this formed the basis of his decision to take up the drastic measure of dynastic change.
