Suzhou Tanci lays stress on “Shuo (story-telling), Xue (joke-cracking), Tan (music-playing) and Chang (aria-sing)”. And it is performed primarily in form of story-telling, larded with story-singing. The singing parts are usually accompanied by playing the Sanxian (a three-stringed plucked instrument) or Pipa (a plucked string instrument with a fretted fingerboard) . Suzhou Tanci is called Xiaoshu. As the saying goes ,“Dashu is used to express power, and Xiaoshu is used to express feeling”. Pinghua, also called Dashu, relating a historical romance, court case, martial arts story or heroic epic. The Tanci, which is also called Xiaoshu, is mainly put on by two people, regarding the stories of daily life and love. Tanci consists of both spoken storytelling and sung ballads. Narration in Tanci is used to create art images, or express emotions and Universal value. It is the main feature of Suzhou Tanci. This paper starts from narrative perspective, narration structure and narration time and space, and mainly talks about the narrative features of Suzhou Tanci which aims to find its artist charm and aesthetic characteristics.
