In mobile ad hoc networks, nodes autonomously exchange their messages each other without centralized control, possibly under highly dynamic topology. The objective of routing protocol in mobile ad hoc networks is to establish a well-organized route between transmitting and receiving nodes to send their messages with minimum control overhead and bandwidth use. In early 1990’s, various protocols had been designed for mobile ad hoc networks, which can be classified as Proactive (or Table-driven), Reactive (or On-demand), and Hybrid protocols. Nowadays, mobile ad hoc networks are facing many challenges like mobile ubiquity, scalability, security, energy constraint, quality of service support, multicast, bandwidth limitations, etc., which makes the routing much harder. The major facets of routing protocols in mobile ad hoc networks are the identification of best available route, coordination with neighboring nodes for route maintenance, route reliability enhancement, overhead reduction, and network efficiency maximization. This article overviews various routing protocols in mobile ad hoc networks while comparing their respective functionalities.
