In order to establish the applicability of local product of plastic containers for cell culture and virological works, a comparative study was made with locally produced and im ported samples of plastic tissue culture containers on the growth of established cell lines, I.e., Vero and E6 cells and the plaque formation by poliovirus type 1 (Sabin) by direct and double overlay methods. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Growth curve experiments of Vero and E6 cells clearly indicated that local product of plastic TC bottles supported the growth of the cells tested to the levels comparable with those in the imported product. There were certain differences in the morphology and pattern of the growth, I.e., Vero cells showing somewhat fibroblastic appearances and with a definite tendency of overlapping growth, but E6 cells exhibiting typical epithe lioid cell appearance and distinctive monolayer growth. 2. The numbers and forms of plaques produced by poliovirus in the cells cultivated in the 1coal product of plastic TC container were almost identical with those in the cells grown in the imported TC bottles tested. As a whole, in use of both the domestic local products and improted products of plastic containers, larger, clearer and more numerous plaques were obtainable with E6 cells and with double overlay method than with Vero cells and with direct overlay. These results indicated that the local product of plastic containers could be fairly appli cable for cell culture and virological works, at least with established cell lines.
