This study is intended to reread Ki-Rim Kim’s The Weather Map in the aspect of Kim’s poetics and his reception of T. S. Eliot. Ki-Rim Kim is considered to be one of the most influential Korean modernist poets who introduced the modern British and American poetry and criticism into Korea. He criticized the sentimental and decadent poems in the 1920s and the content-oriented poems of KAPF in the 1930s of Korea. To criticize those poems, Kim employs Eliot’s modern techniques and asserts the necessity of developing “the holistic poetry” that merges experimental poetic form and modern, intellectual, and scientific content. However, while Kim uses Eliot’s modernistic images, he mainly criticizes two outstanding elements in The Waste Land: Christianity and “the impersonal theory.” Kim suggests humanism as an alternative to Christianity to overcome the crisis of modernism, imperialism, Fascism, and colonialism. In The Weather Map, Kim exercises Eliot’s modern style but holds a positive and optimistic view of the peaceful and harmonious world derived from humanism. Ki-Rim Kim, as a creative critic and poet rather than a simple imitator or blind follower of Eliot, tries to embody his ideas of holistic modern poetry in his own poem, The Weather Map.
