The purpose of this study is to examine the difficulties of pre-school teachers in current practice of outdoor physical activities in the field of early childhood education as well as underlying fundamental causes of those difficulties. Given this purpose, six pre-school teachers were selectively participated and interviewed accordingly. As a result, from the view of pre-school teachers, the difficulties involved in outdoor physical activities were summarized as follows: first, inconvenience and cumbersome; second, the lack of expertise of current pre-school teachers; third, the concern of program directors and parents; and fourth, isolated and marginalized outdoor physical activities compared to other activities within early childhood education programs. With the fact that the majority of pre-school teachers are female, it is practically difficult for them to prepare for the outdoor physical activities and guide children effectively. In addition, outdoor activities bring about another difficulty in making a smooth transition to next indoor activities. Furthermore, most pre-school teachers have difficulty controlling preschoolers outdoor and making them participate in the activities they are organizing because of their lack of expertise in the field of physical education caused by the shortage of courses offered in college or their degree programs. Also, there is a great concern of a program director and parents regarding the safety of outdoor physical activities that make teachers feel burdensome. However, the worst problem is that all the problems mentioned above gradually and repeatedly make outdoor physical activities marginalized and excluded in the curriculum of early childhood education, forming a ‘structural chronicity’ in current early childhood education practice and this makes even harder finding solutions for these problems.
