This article is largely based on personal architectural career resume of the author, spanning over four decades and three continents. As such, its contents may not be objective and in some cases, outdated somewhat. Nevertheless, in view of long history of architectural profession, several fundamental aspects of practice remain unaltered irrespective of various technological advancements in the architectural practice of today, as summarized below:
1) Certain form of training for new graduates of architectural schools is inevitable. It could take 3 years or longer, depending on individual talent, aptitude and enthusiasm. The author was hugely motivated by his contemporaries during his first 3 years in the office.
2) Construction field experience is essential to obtain ‘handson’ experience in ‘how two bricks are carefully put together’. No architectural training can be complete without these fundamental exercises.
3) Good architecture is warranted only through continued researches during the entire design phases. In this perspective, architectural education/researches does not end upon graduation of the academia.
4) We must ensure balanced upgrading of overall architectural profession of Korea - not only the education/accreditation system which has been adopted almost 10 years ago, but also the registration process, professional service procurement system, compensation level and the public recognition of the profession, etc., to the internationally comparable level.
