Due to the rapid change of market needs and shortened product/service life cycle, a lot of companies have focused on innovation to explore new opportunities and value creation. Today`s innovation is realized not only by internal integration but also by external integration. External integration (or collaborative network) means a collaboration with external partners such as customer, supplier, competitor, university, and so forth. Because new insights and ideas can be captured through collaborative network, many companies have built the network. The most important partners in the network are customers and suppliers. Customers provide new idea and evaluate outcomes throughout the entire new product/service development processes. Suppliers suggest solutions that can be applied to each process. However, according to previous literature, these advantages cannot be realized without absorptive capacity, which means a firm`s ability to recognize, assimilate, interpret, and apply the external knowledge from customers and suppliers. Thus, this research investigates the mediating role of absorptive capacity between collaborative network and innovation performance. The research results show that customer involvement has significant effect on product/service convergence and innovation performance. In addition, supplier involvement also influences on these innovation performance. Finally, our research found that absorptive capacity mediates the relationship between collaborative network and innovation performance. The conclusions and future research are discussed.
