The term ‘Gotham City’ comes from the name of Sodom and Gomorrah in the Old Testament, and is a cesspool of corruption and crime. So, ‘Gotham City’ becomes in ideal background for a hero’s appearance, and this material place named ‘Gotham City’ is quite close to a superhero named Batman. Batman has divided ego; one is Bruce Wayne who has a social position as a major shareholder of Wayne Company; and the other is Batman who wages war against crime outside the system. And his inner concerns and lacks are connected to space reappearance. Cinematization of Batman(1989) is made by Joel Schumacher and Christopher Nolan with the start by Tim Burton, and the style has become quite different according to each director’s interpretation of characters. Especially, while ‘Gotham City’ produced by Tim Burton has Gothick expressionistic characteristics, Christopher Nolan doubled reality by reconstructing ‘Gotham City’ through realistic location. This is not a matter which cannot be understood as the difference in aesthetic attitude of each director. Christopher Nolan showed the birth of a superhero with his movie of Batman Begins(2005), the hero’s philosophical agony through The Dark Knight(2008), and finally, he concluded Batman’s growth as well as the whole stories continued from the original movies in The Dark Knight Rises(2012), which shows quite moving ending. Christopher Nolan has a narrative strategy which is differentiated from the previous series having the same original work, and this has a correlation with the way to present space of ‘Gotham City.’ What this thesis pays attention in this trilogy of Batman is changed hero description and the way to present space. Christopher Nolan who caused a Batman sensation in the whole world uses space for expressing expanded reality as he directs these three movies. He expands Batman’s essential concerns into our concerns by removing a cartoon fantasy and by settling the hero in the real world. This aims to prove that it is one way to construct innovate selflanguage, not being bound by the convention of general superhero movies.
