The purpose of this study were to investigate the effect of 6-week static stretching exercises on flexibility and skills training ability in adolescents. Sixteen male handball athletes were randomly assigned to static stretching group (SSG, n=8) and control group (CON, n=6). Static stretching was performed for 30 seconds X 3 sets, rest for 15 seconds between each set for 6 weeks on shoulder, quadriceps and hamstring. Flexibility (ROM, toe touching test) and skills training ability (25 m run, throwing and matching of the handball) were measured before, after 2, 4 and 6 weeks static stretching. ROM (hamstring) and 25 m run were significantly increased after 6 week in SSG compared with before stretching (p〈.05). However, ROM (shoulder and quadriceps), toe touching test, throwing and matching of the handball were not significantly different between times in both groups. These results suggest that static stretching improves hamstring flexibility and redirection performing.
