Natural disasters is occurring all over the world due to climate change. As some solutions restoring water circulation, many techniques such as LID, WSUD, SUDS, and GI have been used. Of all those techniques, WSUD is the method focused on urban planning and design including a lot of functions such as flood risk mitigation, securing sense of place, recreation places and so on. The purpose of this study is to propose the task for WSUD application in Korea through residents’ evaluation of Gwanggyo new town.
As the study method, the evaluation dimensions which are sustainable design, flood risk mitigation, and place making are set and the evaluation criteria which are circularity, ecology, functionality, aesthetics, and multipurpose are set. The WSUD evaluation are conducted with the evaluation dimensions and criteria.
The WSUD application conditions are summarized as followings. First, in the aspect of sustainable design, the circularity and functionality for water cycle management are promoted but the recognition and aesthetics of WSUD elements are lower. Second, in the aspect of flood risk mitigation, most of WSUD elements have circularity and functionality but it is lack to consider the drainage system that linkes WSUD elements. Third, in the aspect of place making, a large-scale factors like a lake show good effects but the other WSUD elements are lower in cognitive and aesthetic characteristics.
Future tasks of the WSUD application can be summarized as followings; the application of various WSUD elements, the improvement of conventional WSUD, and the WSUD application with aesthetics. Socially, it is important to make the residents be interested in WSUD and be realized for the benefits of WSUD.
