『The History of Tonghak』 of Oh Ji-Young is very long writing describing the whole image of Donghak Peasant War, is the book having a significant effect in understanding for the on and after Donghak Peasant War.
But, the position of author or the condition of alike other many records or the description of condition at that times has been reflected. There are a lot of controversial issues in terms of the fact relations, etc. It aims to check the error of 『The History of Tonghak』 by reviewing the initial record of Donghak Peasant War critically in light of level the current research reaches, described in 『The History of Tonghak』 in this writing. First, the difference shown in the original edition and the published book is identified, if it has any correlation with the change of objective condition or the environment in the intention of author, and the new historical sources or the fact relation has been checked.
Generally it seems a lot had been caused in that there are many limits in the data to be referred the time when this book has been described out of error of 『The History of Tonghak』. But, the intention to highlight Jeon Bong-Jun not just Oh Si-Young, Oh Ha-Young being the brother of author is shown in 〈the published book〉. Again, the impression to hide the connection with the small traders as well as with Heungseon Daewongun or the class of Confucian schloars has been received. It seems that this has the relevance to the intention willing to reveal stronger that Donghak Peasant War has been leaded by Donghak fellow students. This intention seems to be successful to some extent. Because such description tendency is kept to the subsequent researches affected by 『The History of Tonghak.
However, the existence or not of the most important “Baeksan contest” and 〈the pronunciamento〉 is the part the persuasive explanation is necessary in terms of fact relation, etc. in light of current research level in any way, it is being “left neglected”. Especially even though the true nature of 〈the pronunciamento〉 raises a lot of question judging from various circumstances, there is little fair action for such question to date. The existence or not of that is very important in relation to the image of Peasant War. More in-depth analysis and the explanation for the relevant data are requested.
