Coloring is a visual form of expression. We often reveal how we think, feel and intend by coloring things. Perhaps not on a par with language, but coloring has its own unique set of social and psychological properties as well. And like language there are many different ways of color-interpreting and color-constructing the world. As a result, it is possible to reconstruct, by studying color expression of the specific era, its psychological and social traits. In this study I examine distinct color combination images of patched wrapping cloth developed in the later Choson Dynasty. For traditionally in Korea patched wrapping cloth has been an excellent medium of color expression. By excavating symbolic messages lying underneath those subtle color combinations I trace the general patterns of the sentiment embedded in the lives of the women in the later Choson Dynasty. More concretely, I first argue that in Korea patched wrapping cloth has been used not only for wrapping and covering things but also as a medium of prayer. For the very act and process of making wrapping cloth was tantamount to praying for the divine grace of happiness and longevity. Secondly, I show that, utilizing color image scale onto the color combination of patched wrapping cloth, those women of the later Choson Dynasty lived a relatively active and pleasant lives, had more or less a casual attitude toward the world, and had dream of bright future.
