The original concept of a type of material called `fiber` has been diversified in its interpretation since 1960s, and through development of the fiber, Korean modern art costume has appeared. As costume started to be acknowledged as a genre of art from 1990s, various material and functional aspects are being appreciated. Therefore, the object of this study is in providing guidance for those producing various art costume works. This will be accomplished by means of understanding the trend of art costumes, and classifying the variety of material and methods utilized by different artists. As art costumes possess a congenital characteristic in its form on "human body", there exists a number of limitations in the trend of words. Entering 1990s, the concept of art costume has been established in Korea, and from the mid-1990s many art costume exhibitions have been opened. The method of art costumes will probably develop further in the near future owing to the diversity of material. Costumes, however, has had its base on human body from the past to the present. Thus, as far as the method in producing art costumes in concerned, majority of methods used in the past are perpetually being used nowadays. One of the distinctive nature of art costumes is that they are hand-made, which enables the artists to work according to his/her feelings, and express artistic senses that alter feely and spontaneously. Art costumes, in explicit philosophy of artists, will soon be produced like Paint of Sculpture, Sculptures of Paint and mark its position as a distinctive genre of modern art.
