The size of the disabled population, including the visually impaired, is on a steady incline as pollution and other man-made disasters affect people despite technological advancements and industrialization. There are approximately over 200 million blind people around the world. 2 million or so people go blind annually. South Korea is no exception: the number of visually impaired people, children and adults alike, is consistently growing. Despite the growing size of the blind population, however, there is an inadequacy of policies and programs designed for the welfare of the blind. The aim of this study is to design and develop products specifically catering to the needs of visually impaired children. More specifically, this study sought to examine and improve many problems and troubles blind children experience while using products designed for non-blind children. This study mainly focused on the storage kits and other storage systems that many children use, by interviewing parents, teachers, and students. The result is the design for a new storage kit that stimulates visually impaired children`s tactile and auditory senses. Although this research focused only on disabled individuals, there are many other groups which have been generally ignored in terms of products suited specifically for their needs. Hopefully this research might inspire others to develop products designed specifically for other overlooked groups within our society.
