The hypothesis of this research is, whether culture and cultural elements can be used as an intervention of daily public space usage, creating new links between people-to-people and people-to -space, by ‘reshaping’ the original socio - cultural structure of the community.
This hypothesis was tested in Hengling, one of Dong Minority villages in China. It showed how traditions and cultural customs can be used to alter perception of people, and provide new functions and social links for their public space.
Through observations and depth interviews, namely the ‘entertaining’; ‘traditional’; ‘spatial’; ‘instinctive’ ; ‘elucidative’ were identified for the enhancement of social link and interactivity of public space in Hengling.
The findings will contribute to the refinement of such intervention elements and strategy making for the socio fabric re-generation in Hengling.
