1974 was a watershed year in the development of the Mondragón cooperatives in Spain. In that year took place the first and only strike in the history of the Mondragón cooperatives. The conflict erupted in Ulgor, the first cooperative in the Cooperative Experience of Mondragón, when the managers put into effect a new system of job evaluations. The leaders of the revolt saw the changes in pay to be unreasonable and counter to the founding spirit of Mondragón cooperatives. More than four hundred workers participated in the strike. The General Council of the ULGOR group expelled seventeen instigators and fined others.
Why did occur the strike in the cooperatives, worker-owners" enterprise? And what was the effect and meaning of the strike? In this paper we seek some answers to these questions. However, there is not so much documents preserved. Therefore, we are going to examine and interpretate the available resources that Joxe Azurmendi and others provided in their books.
