Nishijin textile (Nishijinori) is defined as a representative traditional craft industry of Japan due to unique traditional culture and artistic valuable. Since Nishijin textile has been developed using manual handcraft manufacturing system, Nishijin textile is now facing its worst crisis caused by decrease in the market demands. The political assist and social supports should be required to maintain the traditional handcraft manufacture for Nishijin textile.
This study investigates various attempts to overcome the crisis of Nishijin textile based on the analysis of present issues including literature reviews, statistic data and interview research. The analytical results indicate that the Nishijin textile industry has been kept to be consistent by workshop, workers and government with their ultimate efforts. The main factor for this maintenance is the higher productivity compared to conventional technique. The amount of the demands from the consumers increases because the workshops and government supply the various options to customers for choice of the advanced and innovative products. Moreover, the economic supports have been provided from the government for investigation and research on the hot issues related to development of Nishijin textile. One of the examples of the practical policy enforcement is the OJT(On the Job Training) internships and the craftsman experience lectures.
The attention and interests of the young generations are also provoked by the social campaigns. It is expected that these efforts to continue and promote the traditional handcraft industry should be a commendable example for other countries having similar crisis on traditional industry.
