At the end of May 2014 in Shanghai (China), Russia and China’s Gazprom and CNPC have signed a gas supply contract for the Siberian Eastern line, which has been negotiated for over 10 years since 2004. This represented the achievement of a Big Deal in the energy gas sector between the two countries, and also served as a crucial opportunity for the expansion of the two countries’ cooperation in the gas sector. Meanwhile, the two countries’ gas cooperation has great implications not only for the South Korea – North Korea – Russia trilateral cooperative business regarding the Russian Sakhalin gas and the Japanese’s Russian gas securement business, but also for the establishment of a Energy (gas) cooperative structure in the Northeast Asian region among South Korea –China – Japan, and the Korean government’s policies for its gas sector. Thus, this paper will analyze the continuity and development of China and Russia’s partnership relations under Putin’s third administration and Xi Jin Ping’s administration from different angles, with a focus on the cooperation in the Energy sector (especially, gas) like the May 2014 cooperation that resulted in the Siberian Eastern gas line contract. This paper will focus on the period from March 2014 (after the Russian annexation of Crimea) when the Ukrainian crisis had been in full swing, to early September 2015’s war anniversary of the World War II commemoration in China when the two countries flaunted their new Honeymoon relationship to the world. Since the Ukrainian crises, the gas cooperation between the two countries has continuously developed, but tangible achievements of that cooperation have yet to be found. As a result, this paper argues that it is more realistic to focus on the negative factors of the two countries’ gas cooperation in analyzing and understanding the Russian-Chinese gas cooperation. At the same time, this paper claims that the expansion of the two countries’ gas cooperation should not only serve as an optimistic result for the two countries’ ‘bilateral’ relations, but also for the Northeast Asian ‘regional’ energy cooperation. To conclude, this paper suggests that although the natural gas cooperation project between Russia and China is an important and substantial cooperation field for the two countries, the new honeymoon relations under Putin and Xi Jin Ping may not achieve visible and concrete results regarding the gas cooperative projects in a short period of time as expected.
