This article aims to seek for a biblical foundation of prayer for Korean churches to carry the will of God during the time of crisis and injustice. For this purpose, two texts—Lamentations 3:40-47 and Nehemiah 9:32-38—are selected based on three criteria. First, the texts reflect the time of crisis. One is from a time of national destruction; the other comes from a time of social conflict in the second temple period. Second, ‘We’ appears as the subject of prayer. Third, both texts mention a figure who mediates or leads the confession and plays a salvific role on behalf of “we.”
The exegetical analysis of both prayers draws out the characteristics of biblical prayer in the Old Testament. First, facing historical crisis and injustice, the faith community confesses their responsibilities for the sufferings and is willing to be in solidarity with those who are suffering. Second, their prayer is rooted in the firm faith of the covenant God who is merciful and forgiving, rather than the God of judgement. Third, there appears a messianic figure who mediates between the community and God by calling the community to confess and by asking God for salvation. The figure, even though s/he is innocent, suffers along with the community that confesses their sins.
Modern Christianity tends to focus on praise, among the elements of prayerpraise, pain, penitence, and grace. Likewise, Korean churches seem to be self-centered and emphasize blessings, but do not take responsibility for social injustice and the suffering of the weak. The prayer of “we” in the Old Testament presents a biblical paradigm for a confessional and responsible prayer that Korean churches may follow to bring the justice of God.
